Date of competition : 1 August – 26 November. Entries close at midnight on 26 November 2024.

Location: Nationwide – on both public and private land.

All goat tails and goat heads entered must be wild and taken legally, recreationally, and humanely during the competition period. Wild goat heads can only be taken to an approved New Zealand Deerstalker Association (NZDA) entry point and the local Hunting & Fishing store.

These are the national prize categories

  • Got Your Goat – every person who enters the competition has one chance to win. It is a participation prize drawn at random and everyone has an equal chance of winning.
  • Great Goat Round Up – Every wild goat tail entered gives you 1 entry into this category, the more tails you enter the more entries you get and the greater your chance of getting a prize e.g. 10 tails entered = 10 entries. Winners are drawn at random and there are multiple prizes up for grabs.
  • NZDA’s G.O.A.T – Highest scoring goat head across the whole country. There is one prize pack awarded to the national winner. Open to anyone who enters a goat head at an NZDA branch – you do not have to be an NZDA member.
  • Junior categories – same as above, but restricted to those 18 years and under.
  • Monthly spot prizes – these will be drawn at random from the pool of names that are entered into the competition. Noting end of August prize draw is likely to have the least number of entries, so there would be a greater chance of winning a prize.
  • Goat-Free zone – this is a random prize draw for any landowners who register to have their land be hunted on through the competition website.

    And NZDA branch prizes
  • Got Your Goat - Enter just one wild goat tail or head and go in the draw to win a prize pack from Hunting & Fishing NZ Ltd.
  • Great Goat Round Up - The more wild goat tails entered the more chances to win.
  • NZDA’s G.O.A.T (Greatest of all Time) - Wild goat head with the largest Douglas Score.
  • Junior Goat Round Up - 18 years or under more wild goat tails entered, the more chances to win
  • Junior G.O.A.T. - 18 years or under wild goat head with largest Douglas Score
