Takahē are returning to the Greenstone Valley
|
|

|
It's all happening on the 23rd August 2023DOC’s Takahē Recovery team and local Rangers came to talk about returning the Takahē to the Greenstone Valley.
The breeding program in the Murchisons has gone so well they need new areas for them to live. The DOC have been working hard over the last year eradicating cats from the Greenstone valley and will be monitoring the birds once released via trail cams and ranger visits.
They interestingly mentioned that the Murchisons is not the most ideal location for the birds as there are dangerous bluffs so they have lost a few birds through natural accidents and food is better elsewhere but they have survived there so long as the area is remote. The Greenstone Valley has better tussock for them and so after extensive searches they hope this area will work for the birds.
16 adults will be released in August, 7 adults in October and a further 20 in February 2024.

National Conference A small contingent from the club attended the National Conference in Ashburton in July on behalf of the club. (Andy Pearson, Al Gay, Katie Dugan, Dave and Sarah Veitch) We also had 3 others members attend in other capacities: Sharon Salmons went as a GAC representative, Pete Henderson as the National HUNTS co-ordinator South Island and Kaylyn Pinney was a guest speaker talking about her White Tail Deer research
We heard from a number of guest speakers and met and shared ideas with a number of people there. Well done to Same Gold for winning a category in the photo competition with his seal photo and coming 3rd in overall best photo; and to Andrea Cruickshank for 2 photos in the commended category Congrats to Sarah Veitch for winning the Sheep AHT category and Dave Veitch for coming second with his undrawn pig tusks More details on the winning scores on the National Website

It was great to see a number of members head down and support this show on a cold and bitter weekend. Not sure if it will be an annual or bi-annual event going forward but from all accounts they were pleased with the turnout.

The working bees are a great chance for new members to go for a hunt with more experienced hunters and the chance to get to know a few club members over a whisky or beer round the table at night. These working bees are always a popular annual event, however we do also have lots to do at the Caples so if you can't do both, please try to help at the Caples instead.
