Recent Greenstone Working Bee
|
|
First fallow buck for Blake Veitch - 7 yrs (under supervision from David Veitch) with new member Rhys in the Greenstone last week
|
The annual April trip to the Mid Greenstone hut saw some of our members visit the area for the first time. This is a great asset for the club and even if not hunting, there is great fishing during November to May and it's a great location to take the family for a hike.
Thanks to everyone that helped out last week - we got some more painting done, checked stoat traps, chopped firewood, cleaned windows, and of course got some hunting in.
Since the Greenstone featured in the NZ hunter episode , the recent team up there noticed a lot more activity in the valley particularly opposite the hut on the other side of the river (where they filmed) and we've noticed that the hut bookings have increased.
We do have a members only wardens quarters so if anyone is keen to get away for a few days, hike in, spend a few days up there and check the hut/ keep an eye on things, do let us know.
Next trip While there , the team measured up for some repairs and building work that we are looking to do in September Traps We also need to schedule in refurbish and update of our stoat trapping line So save the dates 20th - 30th Sept 2022 as this is when we will plan another tip in to do traps and maintenance and of course more hunting opportunities available.
|
|
|
Upper Caples Hut We also need to do some general maintenance on our Upper Caples Hut, gutters cleaned, tidy up etc so we may try and send in a team there too - Dates to be confirmed

WARO review - Important information for members
What is WARO? It is a review of where helicopters are going to be allowed to heli hunt 2018 National WARO Review MAR 2022 information sheet.pdf
Why does it affect me?
Because one of the areas is the Remarkables (Nevis Valley) where currently no heli hunting is permitted but if they allow it, the deer will have no where to hide in the tussocks and our local hunting block will be gone!
What should I do?
Make a submission This area was recommended by the local DOC office and public consultation to remain red, however DOC in Wellington have since ignored this recommendation and want to allow heli hunting - grrrr
When do I need to do this by?
Closing date is 27th April
I've never written a submission - what do I do?
Ideally you need to read up and argue the points made and make reference to the arguments in context with the legislation, see the detail below
But I don't have much time for that
Then submit feedback to waro@doc.govt.nz and agree or disagree with the changes
The main areas of interest around here are:-
- Mt Aurum – now Restricted (Roar shutdown only) when it was permitted (no loss)
- Ruataniwha – now Not Permitted, was permitted (big win) - make sure you support that
- Kakanui – now Restricted – was not permitted (loss)
- Murihiku – now Restricted, was Not Permitted (loss)
- Remarkables – now Restricted, was Not Permitted (note this is the new Central area, the adjacent land is Not Permitted) (Big Loss)
- Kopuwai – now Restricted, was Not Permitted (loss)
Where can I read or do more?
1. Read the submission we made in 2018 to give you an example of what we suggested back in 2018 and check out the updated WARO detail on the DOC website
2. Read the changes proposed and why they rejected the proposals. waro-recommendations-draft-2022.pdf
3. Write and email your own submission (but please copy the club for reference)
Email: waro@doc.govt.nz
Subject line: March consultation feedback

Copy of WARO email sent to the club...
You will hopefully recall that, in June 2018, the Department sought feedback on draft recommended changes to its 2015 national Wild Animal Recovery Operations (WARO) land schedule. In December 2018, a second round of feedback was sought on further changes. However, the second round only sought feedback from first round submitters and, following feedback evaluation, the process then stalled mid-2019 for several reasons.
The Department now wishes to complete the process by inviting a 3rd and final round of feedback from anyone potentially affected by the draft changes. The attached word document is largely a re-circulation of the second round proposed changes but with some recent amendments and simpler presentation for easier understanding. There is space for your comment but additional sheets can also be submitted. All land access recommendations have been mapped and are available on the DOC website
A brief information sheet is attached to help answer any questions you may have.
The department was also contemplating moving South Island WARO Roar closure dates for ‘Permitted’ (green) areas from 23 March – 9 April (plus Easter when it falls outside these dates) to 29 March – 15 April (plus Easter when it falls outside these dates) to better align with the actual Roar. Your feedback is invited on this proposal. The Roar dates for ‘Permitted’ locations within Kahurangi National Park would remain unchanged as these are set by bylaws.
Please send feedback to waro@doc.govt.nz . This must be received by 5.00 pm Wednesday 27 April 2022 to be considered.
Kind regards
WARO national review panel

New Arms Act
|
On 24 June 2022, a new part of the Arms Act 1983 comes into force requiring the approval of shooting clubs and certification of ranges. This requires new regulations, which are currently being consulted on by New Zealand Police.
NZDA and The Game Animal Council will be making a submission on behalf of the hunting sector. However, it’s important that our club and individuals also provide their views as clubs and ranges are critical for the safe instruction, training and sighting-in of firearms.
Consultation is open now and runs until 4 May 2022. More information on the consultation, the discussion document, submissions paper and how to submit are available on the police website
